Alpha's Featured Character Oct 10th 2011

http://alphalearningworld.com/characters.htm
Alpha's "Henry Hippo"

Hey Gang! Today's Featured Character is:
Alpha's        "Henry Hippo"

A few interesting Hippo facts:

The Hippopotamus is found in Africa.
The name hippopotamus means ‘river horse’ and is often shortened to hippo. The hippopotamus is generally considered as the third largest land mammal (after the White rhinoceros and elephant).
Hippo's spend a large amount of time in water such as rivers, lakes and swamps. Resting in the water helps keep their body temperature down.
Hippopotamuses actually give birth to their young in the water. These guys are known for their short legs, a huge mouth and a body shaped like a barrel. Although hippo's might look a little chubby, they can very easily outrun a human! Wow, that's fast! They can be extremely aggressive, especially if they feel threatened. Hippos are generally thought of as one of the most dangerous animals in Africa.
The male hippopotamus is called a ‘bull’, the female is called a cow and the babies are known as the calf.
A group of hippos in known as a ‘herd’, ‘pod’, ‘dale’ or ‘bloat’.
Hippo's typically live for around 45 years and they mostly eat grass.

Okay everyone, you can see Henry and his friends right here on this alphabet video at our Alpha's youtube channel. Have fun learning!!

Alpha's ABC's Featured Daily Character  "Vinny Vicuna"

Here's a few interesting Vicuna Facts:
VicuƱa
VicuƱas are the smallest members of the camel family, Camelidae.
These social animals live in family groups of up to twenty-five individuals, which usually consist of one dominant male and his harem of females and their young.
The male is extremely protective of his harem. He has a specialized call to warn of potential predators and he fights with other males — bouts in which, among other things, the opponents may spit at each other.
VicuƱas descend from the hills during the day to feed on grasses and other vegetation, then return to the hills to sleep.
They are now rare, having been heavily exploited to obtain their coat, which is said to make the best wool in the world.

Hey kids, You can see Vinny Vicuna here on our Children's Alphabet Song Video!!

Alpha's ABC's Daily Featured Character

"Ulysses Unicorn"
 Hey kids, Alpha's ABC's "Featured Character" September 27 2011

Unicorn Facts:
Actually the Unicorn is thought to be just a myth, but hey it's a pretty cool character!!!

The Unicorn is a legendary animal, one might say mythical but for the numerous historical accounts of its existence and description. Cave drawings in Lascaux, France depict a horse-like animal with a single straight horn that archeologists have playfully named "the unicorn." Aboriginal paintings found in South Africa and South America are said to be those of unicorns, since they look like no other animal. In 1977, a South American scientist was recorded as stating he believed unicorns to be one of South America's "lost" species, hunted out of existence in pre-history. Still, due to lack of fossil records and other hard-core evidence, most scientists believe the unicorn has never existed.
The modern-day unicorn is depicted as a white horse with a long spiraled golden or white horn coming from its forehead. This has not always been so. In medieval times, the unicorn was considered to be the size of a donkey or goat. It was white, but had the head of a deer, the body of a horse, the tail of a lion, the beard of a goat and cloven hooves.

Alpha's ABC's Daily Featured Character

http://alphalearningworld.com/characters.htm

"Takoda Toucan"
 Hey Boys and Girls!!
Today's Featured Character is:
"Takoda Toucan"

You probably already know that toucans have big bills. As a matter of fact, they have larger bills, in proportion to the size of their body, than any other birds. Here are some interesting facts about toucans' bills - and their other physical attributes.
Click to Print & Color Me
  • An average full-grown toucan weighs less than a pound - about 14 ounces or 400 grams. Full grown toucans are slightly less than two-feet long. From top to tail they are about 20 inches.
  • Studies suggest that a toucan's bill is so large because it helps to keep the bird cool in the warm climates where it lives.
  • Toucans are unable to sweat, which is why they need their bills for air conditioning.
  • Toucans' bills are not solid. Instead, their structure is similar to a honeycomb, making the bills extremely light.
  • Because toucans' bills are so light in weight, they are pretty useless for anything other than cooling. They can't be used for digging or fighting.
  • The bill does, however, allow them to sit in one spot and reach for food, which is a good thing since toucans don't like to move around much.
  • Toucans also can use their bills for camouflage.
  • Toucans' bills average about 8 inches in length.
  • Toucans make use of length of their bills by digging into holes in trees and logs to grab prey.
  • Baby toucans are not born with large beaks; it takes several months for their beaks to reach full size.
  • Toucans have four claws: two on the front and two on the back, which allow them to cling to branches and balance on trees.

Hey Boys & Girls!!
Alpha's ABC's daily featured character is:
And here are a few interesting rabbit facts:

  • Rabbits are mammals and so, give birth to young ones, instead of laying eggs.
  • Even though, rabbits have some resemblance to rodents in appearance, they are not rodents. They have an additional pair of incisors on the upper jaw, along with some structural differences, which make them different from rodents.
  • One of the interesting rabbit facts is that the teeth of rabbits never stop growing. It is said that their teeth (28 in number) grow at least one to five mm, every week. The rate of growth may vary with different teeth and from one rabbit to another.

Hello Boys & Girls!!
Pablo Penguin
Alpha Learning World, Inc.
Alpha's Featured character for today, September 22nd 2011 is:
Pablo Penguin will be featured on our website today and on our facebook page as well !
https://www.facebook.com/alphasabcs

Here are a few interesting penguin facts:

Winter arrives in Antarctica in March. The continent is in the Southern Hemisphere and has seasons that are opposite those in the north. Nearly all creatures leave except for the emperor, the only animal that spends the winter on Antarctica's open ice. Emperor penguins are the largest of the 17 species, or kinds, of penguins, and they spend their entire lives on Antarctic ice and in its waters. They survive breeding, raising young, and eating by relying on a number of clever adaptations. Emperors clump together in huge, huddled masses. They take turns moving to the inside of the group, where they're protected from the icy cold temperatures and wind. Once they've had a chance to warm up, they take their turns back on the circle's edges, giving fellow penguins time in the warmer center.

Alpha's ABC's Character Of The Day

http://alphalearningworld.com/characters.htm

Ozzy Ostrich
Alpha's ABC's Character Of The Day  September 21st 2011

"Ozzy Ostrich"

Here's some interesting Ostrich facts !

Among birds, the ostrich is a record-breaker. It is the tallest and the heaviest of all birds. An ostrich stands up to 9 feet (2.7 meters) tall. That's more than three feet (one meter) taller than the average man. And this bird can weigh as much as 350 pounds (159 kilograms).
While the huge ostrich is a bird—with wings and feathers—it does not fly. Instead it runs. It has long, strong legs. One stride can cover up to 16 feet (4.9 meters)—about the length of a mid-size family car! The bird is speedy, too. It can run just over 40 miles (64 kilometers) an hour for a short distance, and can keep up a speed of more than 30 miles (48 kilometers) an hour over longer distances. The ostrich uses its short wings for balance, holding them outstretched when it runs. On each foot, it has two toes and a four-inch-long (10-centimeter-long) claw, which help give it traction as it speeds along.

Alpha's ABC's Character Of The Day

http://alphalearningworld.com/characters.htm

Nally Nutria
Hey Kids,
Alpha's ABC's  "Character Of The Day" for September 20th 2011 is: Nally Nutria
Here's a couple of interesting facts about the Nutria !

Nutria are large, web-footed rodents that are more agile in the water than on land. They live in burrows, or nests, never far from the water. Nutria may inhabit a riverbank or lake shore, or dwell in the midst of wetlands. They are strong swimmers and can remain submerged for as long as five minutes.
Nutria can be rather social animals and sometimes live in large colonies, reproducing prolifically. Females have two or three litters every year, each consisting of five to seven young. These animals mature quickly and remain with their mothers for only a month or two.

Okay kids, just a reminder hopefully you have already subscribed to this daily blog so that you can automatically be updated with all of our activities, and here is the Alpha's ABC's youtube channel where you can see the alphabet song and all of our videos !
